【Synopsis】
A monk from Awa Province (now Chiba), traveling with his attendant, arrives in Isawa (present-day Yamanashi). Refused lodging due to a local rule, they spend the night in a small riverside hall.
An old cormorant fisherman appears by the river and later visits the hall. The attendant monk realizes he resembles a fisherman who once showed them kindness years before. The old man reveals that the fisherman broke a fishing ban, was killed, and is now a restless ghost. He reenacts his fishing in repentance and asks the monks to pray for him before vanishing into the night.
The monk prays by writing characters of the Lotus Sutra on stones and casting them into the river. Enma, the King of Hell, appears: though the fisherman’s sins were grave, the merit of his past kindness saves him, and he is reborn in the Pure Land.
